You should use peony supports before the plants become tall and heavy, ideally in early spring when the shoots are about 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) high.
Best time to install peony supports
- Early spring: Place support rings or cages around the plant while new growth is emerging.
- Before buds open: Installing supports early allows stems to grow naturally through them and hides the support.
- Avoid waiting until flowering: Once the blooms are open, lifting and tying stems can damage the plant.
Why peonies need support
